Tirana International Airport

Tirana International Airport

Tirana International Airport, also known as Nënë Tereza Airport, serves as Albania's primary air hub, conveniently located 17 kilometers from the capital, offering connections to major European cities through airlines like Lufthansa, British Airways, and Air Albania.

Albania’s gateway to Europe

Tirana International Airport “Nënë Tereza” (Mother Teresa) sits 17 kilometers northwest of the capital in Rinas. It’s Albania’s only international airport—and you know what? That’s not a problem.

The airport handled 5.2 million passengers in 2023, up significantly from previous years. The modern terminal can process 6 million passengers annually, which means you’re not dealing with the chaos you might expect at a small Balkan airport.

Location & accessibility

The airport sits along the SH2 national road, making it straightforward to reach whether you’re heading into Tirana or north toward Shkodër.

From the airport to central Tirana:

  • Taxi: Fixed fare around 2,500 Albanian Lek (~€23-25). Takes 20-30 minutes depending on traffic.
  • Rinas Express Bus: Runs hourly from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, costs 300 Lek (~€3). Drops you at Skanderbeg Square in the city center.
  • Rental car: All major agencies are in the arrivals hall. You can pick up and drive straight out.

Airlines & connections

Air Albania is the national carrier, but you’ll also find regular service from:

  • Lufthansa (connections through Frankfurt/Munich)
  • British Airways (London)
  • Turkish Airlines (Istanbul hub)
  • Austrian Airlines (Vienna hub)
  • Wizz Air (budget routes across Europe)
  • Ryanair (expanding seasonal routes)

Seasonal routes to Rome, London, and Istanbul increase during summer. Most connections route through major European hubs—there’s no direct long-haul from North America or Asia yet.

Getting around from TIA

Most travelers either head straight to Tirana or pick up a rental car to explore the country independently.

Tirana Airport Transportation

If you’re renting a car:

The airport is your best pickup location—you avoid Tirana traffic and can head straight to your first destination. Roads north to Shkodër, south to the coast, or east to Berat are all accessible from here without navigating the capital.

If you’re exploring independently:

Skip the group tours. Rent a car at the airport and you control your schedule—perfect for stops in Shkodër, the ferry across Lake Koman, or drives up to Valbona and Theth in the north.

Practical tips

Arriving late at night? Taxis are always available, even on the latest flights. The Rinas Express stops running at 6:00 PM, so you’ll need a taxi or pre-booked transfer.

SIM card on arrival? There’s a Vodafone Albania kiosk in the arrivals hall. €10-15 gets you 10-20GB for a week or two—easier than hunting for one in the city.

Food before leaving? If you’re heading straight out to explore, grab coffee and a byrek (cheese/spinach pie) at one of the cafes. It’s better than stopping for mediocre roadside food later.

Security & check-in: Arrive 2 hours before European flights, 2.5 hours for any connections requiring deeper security. The airport is efficient but not huge—you don’t need 3+ hours like at major hubs.

Why this matters

TIA is small, modern, and easy to navigate. You’re not going to get lost or stressed here. It’s the opposite of the chaos you might expect from a small Balkan airport.

The only limitation is direct routes—if you’re coming from outside Europe, you’ll connect through a hub. Vienna, Istanbul, Frankfurt, and Rome are the most common. But once you’re in Europe, getting to Albania is straightforward and often cheap (€50-150 return on budget carriers if you book ahead).

If you’re planning to explore more than just Tirana, rent the car at the airport and skip the capital entirely. You’ll save time, avoid traffic, and start your trip on your terms.
